Pro-Choice "Choices" this Election for 32nd District

Reprinting a letter published in Shoreline Area News with permission of the author.

Letter to the Editor: Vote Pro-Choice

To the Editor:

Pro-choice means that reproductive decisions are the choice of the woman.

Here’s a quick run-down on the anti-choice positions of some of the candidates running for the state legislature in the 32nd district.

David Baker: conservative candidate for the State Senate.

it is pretty clear from the company he keeps that we cannot trust him to be a vote for women’s rights and health as a State Senator. He has been endorsed by anti-choice elected officials (like Rep. Dave Reichert) and he is supported by local Tea Party activists.

Art Coday: anti-choice, anti-evolution candidate for State House, position 1.

Art Coday has been endorsed by the Human Life PAC, a right-wing anti-choice organization that opposes access to abortion care even in cases of rape or incest. Not only that, he told voters at a forum last week that he thinks creationism should be taught in our public schools. Art Coday would be a threat to women’s rights and health in Olympia!

Gary Gagliardi: anti-choice conservative candidate for State House position 2.

Gary Gagliardi’s staunchly anti-choice beliefs have also earned him the endorsement of Human Life PAC. Gagliardi would be a vote against reproductive health care for Washington women!

Luckily, there is a pro-choice champion in each of these races. Here are two important ways to make sure we keep these seats pro-choice and stop right-wing conservatives like Baker, Coday and Gagliardi from getting to Olympia:

Vote for 32nd District pro-choice candidates by November 2.

• Cindy Ryu for State House (position 1)

• Ruth Kagi for State House (position 2)

Forward this to voting friends in the 32nd district and urge them to vote in support of women’s health!

Thank you for standing up for a pro-choice future!

PI.com: Chase, Ryu and Kagi in the 32nd

By SEATTLEPI.COM EDITORIAL BOARD
As a 40-plus year political activist, State Rep. Maralyn Chase has campaigned for civil rights and against the Vietnam War, fought for a fair tax structure, and championed renewable clean energy.
She has been a contentious activist, carrying on feuds even within the Democratic Party.
Seattlepi.com endorses her for Washington state Senate in the 32nd District, turf divided between King and Snohomish Counties. She is a progressive prod in a capital where, all too often, any reform is considered not worth doing until proven otherwise.
It's a tough choice, since Republicans have in Kenmore Mayor David Baker fielded a candidate with broad civic experience.
Baker is pledging to fund quality schools, make communities safer and work for transportation improvements. At the same time, however, Baker promises to "control runaway spending" and boasts of voting against "every proposed tax increase" as a city councilman.
The state should control spending, but investment in schools and colleges and transportation is integral to Washington's future growth and emergence from the Great Recession.
At the same time, two words of advice for Chase: Cool it! Wear the opposition of some as a badge of honor. With colleagues, however, be more cooperative and less preachy. The Senate Democratic Caucus is a big tent.
Two quality candidates are vying for the House seat currently held by Chase.
Cindy Ryu, a Democrat, is a prized recruit for a very difficult job. She is a former Shoreline mayor, has headed the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, done all sorts of community work, and served as a neighborhood Allstate Insurance agent for 18 years.
Dr. Art Coday, a physician, started the year as a Republican candidate against Sen. Patty Murray, but moved to the legislative race after GOP leaders recruited Dino Rossi to run.
He follows a familiar, contradictory line, pledging to work for more spent in schools while saying he wants to "lower tax rates."
Seattlepi.com endorses Ryu.
Incumbent State Rep. Ruth Kagi, a Democrat, is a former League of Women Voters leader and chair of the House Early Learning and Children's Services Committee.
Kagi was rated "Outstanding" by the Municipal League of King County. Although billing himself "an internationally known business strategist," Republican opponent Gary Gagliardi received an "Adequate."
Kagi is a more-than-adequate legislator. We endorses her re-election.

LFP mayor orders across-the-board cuts in response to Prop. 1 defeat

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

Lake Forest Park Mayor Dave Hutchinson announced a 10 percent across-the-board cut in City programs in response to the apparent defeat of the City's Proposition 1 in the Tuesday election.

The proposition would have let the City increase its property-tax revenue beyond the 1 percent increases allowed under a voter-approved State law.

Opponents said that the measure would have given the City a blank check to raise property taxes.

LFP ballots counted Wednesday afternoon saw the losing margin fall from 80.3-19.7 to 79.4-20.6 percent.

Wednesday's count raised LFP voter turnout to 39.75 percent of registered voters, with more expected to come in. King County elections officials had projected a 45 percent countywide turnout, but reported only 27 percent through Wednesday.Votes counted include ballots received by Tuesday morning. Elections officials say that it takes two days to open ballots and compile updated results.

King County expects to update results at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Results through Wednesday:
