Eric Nelson Ahead in KCD Race by Wide Margin

Duval dairy farmer Eric Nelson appears to have a wide lead (56% of vote) in the King Conservation District Board of Supervisor's race.

KCD states the following results:
Eric Nelson - 1292, Douglas "Bruce" Elliott - 820, Teri Herrera -129, Preston Prudent - 54

Eric Nelson received many endorsements including the King County Conservation Voters and KC Exec Dow Constantine.

This election was the first "online" vote in the US, conducted by KCD. The district was seeking to involve more voters than in the past. It's not clear whether this goal was achieved.

King County Conservation Voters is hosting a Get Out The Vote Event next Thursdayto assist voters.
King Conservation District Election

The KCD Election is underway until March 15th, with a new way to vote in an attempt to boost turnout.

The election is an "online voting" process.  And seems like a better way to get voters involved, since voters won't need to drive to a few polling sites, like it was done in the past.


But some voters are finding this new process just as daunting. Some voters are finding the process that was meant to facilitate more participation, a bit more cumbersome. Some technology is required in order to participate.  Voters need to go to the site "online", download and print a  form, fill it out and return it via fax, scanner or mail.  Then when "eligibility" is confirmed, one can vote. (Voters are eligible if they live in KCD contracting cities.) 
It is a two step process to vote online. 
 Here are the steps from the KCD website:

Step 1 - Confirm Voter Eligibility:  Click on the blue button below to obtain your Voter Application Form. Print, sign and submit by email(scanned copy), fax or US mail. We suggest voter applications submitted by US mail should be postmarked no later than March 11.

Step 2 - Vote On-line:Once your eligibility is confirmed, a personal identification number (PIN) will be issued by email with complete online voting access information.

Note: Please allow up to 48 hours after application for voting instructions and credentials to be issued.

The KCD is a very important, independent local District, that administers over 6 million dollars of conservation funding for such things as water quality and salmon recovery. Their Board of Supervisors are elected by King County Voters. Voters can also vote in person at the KCD offices on March 15th, You may vote in-person on March 15 between the hours of 9:00 am - 9:00 pm at the King Conservation District office: 1107 SW Grady Way, Suite 130, Renton, WA 98057 (across the parking lot from the former King County elections building). In-person voters should bring proper identification.

Eric's Candidate Statement:

I am a candidate for the King Conservation District Board of Supervisors.  I currently operate a dairy farm in Duvall.  I am also a King County native and a three generation farmer.  I have served on the King County Agriculture Commission as a representative of the dairy industry and was its first Chair.  I am currently also serving as a Commissioner of Drainage District #6 and am serving on the King County Agricultural Drainage Assistance Program Advisory Committee.

I have had the opportunity to work with the King CD for many years, both as a user of their farm planning and cost-sharing assistance, and as a partner agency when I worked for King County as Livestock Program Manager and as the County’s Agriculture Program Manager.  I have always found their programs to be very helpful and have seen the great job the district does in working with the county’s residents and jurisdictions with resource protection and conservation needs.

I feel my background as a farmer, a former agriculture commissioner, and as a former Agriculture Program Manager for King County, that I am uniquely qualified to serve as a member of the KCD’s Board of Supervisors.  I understand the importance of resource conservation for all of our county’s residents, rural and urban alike, and will do my best to see that the conservation needs of all of our residents are met and would appreciate your vote in the upcoming election.

The King Conservation District (King CD) is holding a public election for the Board of Supervisor position #2. This election features new, convenient and secure on-line voting. Voters may vote from their home, business or other computer locations.*

1. When is the election?

• On-line voting:February 15 (starting at 9 am) - March 15 (ending at 9 pm)
• In-person voting:March 15 9:00 am - 9:00 pm (one day only)

2. Who can vote? 
You must be registered to vote in King County (excluding residents of cities that are not members of the King Conservation District: Enumclaw, Federal Way, Milton, Pacific and Skykomish). View voter eligibility map.

3. How do I vote on-line?On-line voting requires a voter to have access to an email account and internet connectivity. Note that more than one voter can use the same email address.

Online King Conservation District Election Coming Up

KCD or King Conservation District has decided to change the way their Board of Supervisors elections are conducted.

King Conservation District provides many services for landowners and those who care about the environment. They help farmers,  property owners and cities cope with water quality, habitat and soils problems and solutions. They also hold a very popular "Bareroot Plant Sale", which will be underway soon. KCD is funded by a small tax assessment and provides expertise to cities and communities on ways to reduce pollution, prevent flooding, improve habitat and protect soil resources.

For many years they have held special elections in limited polling locations. Now KCD is opening up these elections to a much greater group of voters by conducting an ONLINE ballot process.

There is also a way to vote in person at the KCD office in Renton.

Print, sign and submit signed affidavit (available at www.kingcd.org after Feb 14)

STEP 2 - Vote Online

Once voter eligibility is confirmed a personal identification number (PIN) will be emailed to you along with voting instructions.

If you have not received your PIN by 5 pm on March 14, you will need to vote in person at the King Conservation District office on March 15 between 9 am and 9 pm.

2011 Board of Supervisors Election Information

The King Conservation District (King CD) is inviting prospective candidates to submit applications for the Board of Supervisor position #2 in advance of a month-long, district-wide public election period beginning February 15, 2011 and ending at 9 pm March 15. This election will feature new, convenient and secure on-line voting. Click here for more information.

Registered voters who reside within the district’s boundaries are eligible to submit an application. Candidates must complete a nomination petition form and gather at least 25 signatures of registered voters who reside within the district. The petition must be delivered to the King CD office (1107 SW Grady Way, Suite 130, Renton) by February 1. Click here for application and petition forms.

Individuals interested in running for the position (serving a three-year term on voluntary basis) are encouraged to contact the King CD for more information on the board’s duties and responsibilities.

The all-volunteer, five-member board includes three elected members and two who are appointed by the Washington State Conservation Commission. All supervisors serve three-year terms and should anticipate a minimum 10 hour per month time commitment. As public officials, their responsibility is to ensure that the King CD meets its legal and public trust obligations. The board of supervisors conducts regular public meetings to oversee the district’s budget and provide policy guidance and oversight to district staff.

Supervisors are expected to help identify critical resource conservation needs in their district, communicate with the public and seek feedback about conservation programs from district residents. King Conservation District elections occur annually during the first quarter of each year. Elections for the King Conservation District and the other 46 conservation districts in Washington State are conducted pursuant to guidelines established byRCW 89.08 with oversight from the Washington State Conservation Commission, an agency created to assist and guide conservation district activities in Washington State.

Election Day Information

King Conservation District, working with election administrator Election Trust, will provide 7 polling locations for the election on March 16th (please see list below or visit www.kingcd.org).
