Eric Nelson Ahead in KCD Race by Wide Margin

Duval dairy farmer Eric Nelson appears to have a wide lead (56% of vote) in the King Conservation District Board of Supervisor's race.

KCD states the following results:
Eric Nelson - 1292, Douglas "Bruce" Elliott - 820, Teri Herrera -129, Preston Prudent - 54

Eric Nelson received many endorsements including the King County Conservation Voters and KC Exec Dow Constantine.

This election was the first "online" vote in the US, conducted by KCD. The district was seeking to involve more voters than in the past. It's not clear whether this goal was achieved.

Eric K. Nelson won the King CD election and will be seated on the Board of Supervisors at the June Board of Supervisors meeting. (Please note: These results will not become official until certified by the Washington State Conservation Commission in May, 2011.)

Washington Conservation Voters Hosting a GOTV Event for KCD Election

King County Conservation Voters is hosting a Get Out The Vote Event next Thursdayto assist voters.
King Conservation District Election

The KCD Election is underway until March 15th, with a new way to vote in an attempt to boost turnout.

The election is an "online voting" process.  And seems like a better way to get voters involved, since voters won't need to drive to a few polling sites, like it was done in the past.


But some voters are finding this new process just as daunting. Some voters are finding the process that was meant to facilitate more participation, a bit more cumbersome. Some technology is required in order to participate.  Voters need to go to the site "online", download and print a  form, fill it out and return it via fax, scanner or mail.  Then when "eligibility" is confirmed, one can vote. (Voters are eligible if they live in KCD contracting cities.) 
It is a two step process to vote online. 
 Here are the steps from the KCD website:

Step 1 - Confirm Voter Eligibility:  Click on the blue button below to obtain your Voter Application Form. Print, sign and submit by email(scanned copy), fax or US mail. We suggest voter applications submitted by US mail should be postmarked no later than March 11.

Step 2 - Vote On-line:Once your eligibility is confirmed, a personal identification number (PIN) will be issued by email with complete online voting access information.

Note: Please allow up to 48 hours after application for voting instructions and credentials to be issued.

The KCD is a very important, independent local District, that administers over 6 million dollars of conservation funding for such things as water quality and salmon recovery. Their Board of Supervisors are elected by King County Voters. Voters can also vote in person at the KCD offices on March 15th, You may vote in-person on March 15 between the hours of 9:00 am - 9:00 pm at the King Conservation District office: 1107 SW Grady Way, Suite 130, Renton, WA 98057 (across the parking lot from the former King County elections building). In-person voters should bring proper identification.

Update on KCD Election

We are very pleased to report that longtime KCD activist Max Prinsen has WON the KCD Commissioners race.

In the largest turnout ever for a King County Conservation District Election, Shoreline poll voters (anyone who voted at the Shoreline Library, including many LFP and N Seattle Voters) made a huge difference.

The voting total in this race was 4,232 which nearly doubled from the 2,757 voters in the last race in 2009.

Last night at about 7pm, it was reported that about 550 voters had cast their votes at the Shoreline Library.

There were 3 very good "green candidates" in the race (in our opinion), Max Prinsen from Renton, Kirk Prindle of Seattle and Mary Embleton also of Seattle.

According to the KCD Website -

"The final vote tallies for elected board position included Prinsen (1,772), Mara Heiman of Auburn (1,488), Mary Embleton of Seattle (519), Kirk Prindle of Seattle (402) and Teri Herrera of Redmond (51)."

In our opinion, this is a great victory for environmental voters and grass roots efforts, AND for our impacts on the election from the North End. Yesterday we received dozens of email contacts from interested voters, urging folks to get out and vote in this obscure election. 

So, even though many in the blogosphere dismissed this election as "stupid", we showed that our valiant voters in our area cared and made the difference.

Thanks to everyone who made the effort.  We will look forward to more assistance from KCD on our Urban Stream restoration efforts.
